A slow WordPress site loses visitors and Google rankings. Before you pay anyone to “optimise” it, check these — in order of how often they’re the real cause.

1. Oversized images

The number one cause. A 4MB photo straight off a phone can outweigh the rest of the page combined. Resize images to the size they display and let WordPress generate the smaller versions.

2. Too many plugins

Every plugin loads code on every visit. Twenty plugins with sliders, galleries and “optimisers” often make things slower than the problem they solve. Deactivate anything you don’t truly use.

3. Overcrowded cheap hosting

This is the one hosts don’t advertise: budget overseas hosting can cram thousands of sites on one server. Your site is slow because it’s queueing. If your site is slow even with small images and few plugins, the server is the problem — and no plugin fixes that.

4. An old PHP version

Modern PHP is dramatically faster. If your host still runs your site on an old version, ask them to update it — it’s free and often an instant speed-up.

5. A bloated theme

Themes bought for their 50 demo layouts carry the weight of all 50. Lean themes routinely halve load times.

6. No caching

Caching serves ready-made pages instead of rebuilding them per visitor. On a well-run server it’s the cherry on top — not a bandage for slow hosting.

7. Distance
